Yamaha AN1x Image

The AN1x is a powerful retro-analog synth with a really cool new feature that lets you record real-time editing and filtering and be able to store it as part of the sound! A major contender in the new wave of analog-digital synths using DSP modeling of analog waveforms to recreate the coveted sounds of analog synths with modern digital specifications. It offers truly traditional yet modern methods of analog synthesizing, 10 notes of polyphony, 8 knobs for tweaking, and an arpeggiator with dozens of inspiring patterns!

Although the AN1x is not a follow-up to the CS1x (which has since been followed by the CS2x and the CS6x) it has borrowed many functions and technologies from the CS1x synth. First, it's built in an almost identical case with the same layout of buttons and knobs as the CS1x. However the function of every knob and button has been greatly expanded. The AN1x also has 2 Scene memories for instant recall of any envelope and filter settings and the mod-wheel can be used to morph between the two scenes. On-board effects and a state-of-the-art arpeggiator section also are on-board for giving your sounds life and motion.

The AN1x adds a new Ribbon controller for increased real-time control. It also includes pulse width modulation, ring modulation and oscillator syncing. The AN1x may not be the next evolution of the CS1x but it is basically a more advanced synth capable of increased sound potential and quality. It has a better feeling keyboard than the CS1x as well assuming that the AN1x is for those looking for something more professional than the CS1x. The AN1x is already being used by several artists, film and TV composers world-wide, including Nitin Sawnhey, the Faint, Igor Khoroshev, Yes, Little Tragedies and Phish.

The AN1x is amazing! One of the powerful seq I have ever had, and the "morph" function between sounds scenes is a very interesting tool to create strange atmospheres. Definitively: I'm so happy to get one :)

I just bought one and will pick-up on monday. I'm a Korg's fan and have a Poly800, DW-8000, X3 and a beautifull MS2000B. I love real analogue synths but VA as well and I think it's a great synth along with MS2000 and Roland JP8000, all three beasts from late '90s and early 2k. I will tell you when I put my hands on this jem, I can't wait !!!

PS: Sorry about my so bad english :)

PROGRAMMING - no problem at all! Do not believe anyone saying that it is not solved well on this synth or it is hard to program in any sense. In fact it is. The only thing is - you just need to know how to program an analog synthesizer with vaaaaaaaast possibilities as you can edit EVERYTHING, employ ring modulation, FM, etc etc. All you need is written onboard and you reach parameters you want to edit really quickly. The only problem is missing data dial or slider or knob but to me this is only a small one as you still reach the desired position fastly with a button. OVERALL? Gonna buy a second one soon and use it live together. I love it.

SOUND - Presets? Real crap. Maybe 10 out of 128 are of use. But do not let yourself be misleaded. You can get very very close to almost any of the great times´synths but with 10 voices of polyphony (usually quite enough) and 100% stability. Its mono and legato modes make it a great monosynth if you like. Unison mode makes the sound a real beast, but even single or dual mode allow for thick sounds. I found the synth great in brass and lead sounds. But it is good for anything, truly - strings, pads, FX patches, even the basses can be punchy and changing the pace of your heart, you just need to tweak a bit :-) Overall warm, very very "living", have a character. Tip - use the feedback parameter within white Amp section of parameters. Great results you achieve when you use the Aural exciter, which works truly fantastically. Reverb and delay - no problem to use. Rest of the effects is nothing exceptional but still usable.

For me, this is the ultimate VA synth! At Yamaha they made everything to make this synth not-attractive. But all the beauty is hidden inside. Despite the plastic body and controllers it is a solid work. Seen several AN1xs and all had all the buttons, knobs, etc. working and without damage after many years of usaje. INTERFACE - the keyboard is one of the best you can get. Perfect action and a perfect aftertouch. Pitch bender and modulation have just the right action and feel, too. Ribbon controller? With position PLUS pressure sensitivity? Great. All in all, it is ideal for live performance as you have so many controllers for real-time editing and practically each of them you can assign to any parameter.
