Yamaha CS2x

Yamaha CS2x Image

The second generation of the popular CS1x synthesizer is back in a bold and bright new Analog Modeling synth - the CS2x. Many new improvements and enhancements have been made. Polyphony has doubled to 64 voices and there's 16MB of sampled waveforms! There are 64 resonant 24dB filters! The Arpeggiator now holds 40 patterns for animating your sounds. All functions are MIDI capable, even the Arpeggiator can transmit its pattern data to other synths or sequencers! There is even a direct TO-HOST connector for direct hook-up to your computer.

The CS2x is perfect for studio work as well as live performance. Plenty of semi-dedicated and assignable knobs are available for real time analog style editing of all parameters at all times. The ultra-cool Memory Scene buttons from the CS1x are back on the CS2x and can memorize up to 2 current edit parameter settings. The two scenes can also be morphed via the Mod-wheel. Scene memories are saved with your current patch in one of 256 user patches. The CS2x sounds great and is totally suited for making great dance music with lots of hands on control for animated and evolving synth sounds with digital clarity and lots of control! It's been used by Depeche Mode.

Does any one know where to get some high quality sound sets for this thing . something like the sounds of revolution stuff for the jp-8000?

Recently I bought one for €150.

It's a nice synth, but definately not a sonic monster. Editing sounds is easy, but don't expect super spectacular things to happen.

The XG bank is a bonus and comes in handy when doodling.

I prefer using a proper synth over 'flimsy' MIDI controllers as keyboards on synths tend to be better built. Great value for money.

Update, I made some really cool interesting sounds with it, but locating the waveforms is a pain.
There are about 600 waveforms, 4 can be layered at once in a patch, but they are scattered all over the place and finding them is tedious. Most of the cool sounds I made seemed to happen by accident.
The subtractive part is straightforward.
The description says there are 64 filters? I cant find them...Hp and Lp thats all..
Then distortion and overdrive effects are terrible, compressor is crap, choruses, reverbs are ok, flangers phasers , wahs, and enhancers sound good.
Est,value $700? I got mine for $250, Motifs which use this similar technology but refined x100 times over can be had for $700.

I just got one, and yes it's a very capable synth. I was editing sounds within an hour of having it, editing matrix is intuitive imho.
It is a synth, just not a "traditional" synth. Uses waveforms not ossillators, though it does have lfos to modulate whatever.

Portamento is excellent, can easily switch between poly/mono.
The "multi sounds" "xg banks" are not editable and arp can't be assigned to them, a bummer, but having them available, makes this a well rounded instrument.

as someone said the beauty of this is that some of the samples are derived from the EX5, which is a yamaha classic. Very good at pads for a cheaper machine.
