Yamaha CS-60

Yamaha CS-60 Image

The CS-60 is a very scaled down light version of the CS-80. It's a classic and old polyphonic programmable analog synthesizer that has some potential. It does not sound as great as the CS-80 nor is it as programmable. You get a few preset sounds which are pretty useless and a mere 1 user patch. But there are just enough sliders, edit parameters and even an excellent Ring Modulator to get some interesting pads, drones, basses and other analog synth sounds. Oddly, sitting between the keyboard and those large Preset Switches is a long velvet ribbon controller which is pretty cool for doing wild pitch bends.

Due to its old age most CS-60s are in battered shape these days, difficult to service but in need of some. And they suffer common ailments of the analog domain - overheating, unstable tuning, it weighs a lot, etc... However the CS-60 is the cheapest way to get into some genuine CS-80 sounds of analog heaven with basic entry-level programming! It has been used by Air, Jean-Michel Jarre, Oshe and Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Agree with comments below - this VS review is stupid. The CS60 has exactly the same voices and architecture as the CS80, just one less oscillator - hence the 'just enough edit parameters' is ludicrous - it has exactly the same as the CS60, just that there are double on the CS80 because it has two oscillators and the parameters are just doubled. Only one user patch ... erm one more than any other big analogues from back then. Very limited? OK, it doesn't have polyphonic aftertouch - what other synths in history have? Silly review.

The 3-star rating here is a joke and an oversight....where else are you going to get 'the sound' of the CS-80(when doubletracked) for under 10 grand anymore?? this has it and it doesn't weigh 200 pounds.
Sure... it's seemingly limited compared to later "proper polysynths". But CS-60 has the ribbon and lovely pressure sensitivity, bonkers ring-mod, foot interface(s) and an overall refinement that oddly the newer one's can't match. The onboard sine makes things fatter if desired, but this synth is all about lush warmth and stunning highs. Get a moog or somesuch for bass.

Oh...... the writeup here does NOT do this synth justice ! You can modify any of the presets with ring mod or sustain with glissando or portamento and come up with some truly awesome sounds.....I'm willing to bet the writer of this article doesn't know his stuff and never had one ! IMAGINATION REQUIRED with a synth like this !!

I have a CS-60 in perfect condition...I haven't had it calibrated in 15 years so it probably needs it but not if you can't afford it as it still sounds great. I have the legsand the volume pedal, both in excellent condition. ( I even have the bag they came in although not in great shape !) E-mail me at rockivory@homail.com for price and any questions you may have.
I LOVE this synth and hate to sell it but I have to for survival. I also have a CS-50 which was my very first synth and I'm keeping that.
