Yamaha DX27

Yamaha DX27 Image

The DX27 is a full sized keyboard version of the DX100. Like all DX's it uses (FM) Frequency Modulation synthesis. It's not the easiest form of synthesis to program but can result in some excellent sounds. The DX27 is not as flexible nor powerful as a DX7, but it does have some cool sounds. It is most renowned for its great analog bass sound (Patch #01) that is awesome for techno, house, jungle, and acid music styles; it's very gritty, the bass tone with gristle! However, any other preset sounds that you'll find in the DX100 are pretty bad. Though the DX27 adds a standard 61 note keyboard it still lacks filters, arpeggiators, effects or performance wheels and controllers.

Pictured above is the DX27S which adds built-in speakers for the home-user. It also has a stereo chorus effect and Pitch bend & Mod wheels and has support for a Breath Controller.

I use it as an additionnal instrument in a band and for recordings because I don't have another one, and I must say I'm always satisfied. The dry sound is not the amazing sound you were waiting for, but with some light effects and well used the DX27 sound is easy to use and integrate, and gives a little touch of personnality. I just love it.

I programmed one of these, belonging to my girlfriend, years ago & got the knack of it ok. years later I bought a DX7 . Now I can get sounds out of a DX7 that blow the presets away for pure bass power . however I was stunned to note that the DX7 ( being older) does not have LFOs where at the DX27 does. So altho' you don't have as many operators ( oscillators) to play with you have a different sonic pallette available . I'm just telling you not to write off the later cut down version FM synths they aren't all about disadvantages over the flagship models after all.

Im really interested in finding one, I need it to use my talkbox, to do what roger troutman did, ,very cool! Its a speaker connected to a tube, and everytime you play a note on the synth, it changes your voice to the keyboards tone,
