Yamaha RM1x Image

The RM1x is a great new pattern based instant dance music machine! It sounds great! The patterns are perfect and inspiring forms of trance, house, hardcore and more with tons of great analog-like sounds and drum kits. The RM1x also features plenty of effects, filters, knobs, and MIDI control. The patterns have a whopping 16 parts (that you can drop-in or out in real-time performances) for lavish and professional productions. Making dance music has never been easier!

For those of you who want to get a little deeper into creating your own tracks, patterns and sounds, there is more. As if the awesome preset patterns aren't enough for you, creating your own 'phrases' is easy. You can modify a phrase's variation, instruments, sounds, tempo, filtering, LFO, and effects until you've morphed it into something of your own. Then store it into one of the 50 user patches. Creating an entire song is also pretty easy. Knobs, mutes, and patterns can be changed on the fly or meticulously programmed in. For the best all-in-one music box that will make you famous for a day - chose the RM1x over the rest! It is used by Apollo 440, Crystal Distortion, and Signal Electrique.

Question: Just got an rm1x on ebay, but can't get it to actually "play" any pattern. All buttons seem to work, and I can go in and hear all the "sounds" but I can't get the preset patterns to sound. I tried a simple sequence to see if I could get a user pattern to sound and it didn't play either. Am I doing something wrong or should I send it back as non-working? I have the manual and followed "Quickstart" but again, no pattern would sound/play. Any suggestions??? Thanks!!!

The built in sound are your bog standard naff Yamaha sounds. But, the magic really begins with it's fantastic MIDI controlling capabilities. I currently have the RM1X controlling a x0xb0x, a Zoom Sampletrak and a SH-101, all at the same time. I rarely ever use the RM1X's own sounds, other than maracas and stuff because the Sampletrak has not the best sample quality.
A wonderful machine and as timeless as a hardware sequencer could possibly be.

I was really disappointed with this groovebox. The bass is really brittle compared to the Roland grooveboxes I've used; it has that digital aliasing sound to it that is just...yuck. Even the MC-303 will ultimately produce higher quality tracks than this groovebox. A real shame.

Also, the arpeggiator is desperately simple. The filter is...meh. Sorry to talk so poorly about it. I own one, and I never use it because it sounds so lame.

@Bob humid, max wasn't referring to the TR-909. The mentioned devices were the Roland MC series (MC-505, 808, and 909) and ARE similar in concept to the Rm1x and RS7000. This is why Max mentioned that Roland invented the 'groovebox' concept.

That said, I've owned a Roland MC-909 and 808... and I hated both of them. Much prefer the RT Spectralis over those. I've also had a Korg EMX and disliked that as well. Wouldn't mind trying the Yamaha's out or the Elektron gear.

I have a question on the multi-Timbral setup. i'm not crazy about the actual sounds in the RMX1 so can i use another Synth Module that's like 8 part multi-Timbral and just use the RMX1 as a sequencer..will that work?
