Yamaha TX7

Yamaha TX7 Image

The TX7 is essentially a non-rack-mountable desktop module form of Yamaha's DX7 FM synthesizer. Editing can not be done from the front panel, but must be accomplished externally via MIDI using either a DX7 keyboard, the PR-7 programmer or a computer. Software such as Unisyn can be used to edit the parameters of the TX7. There are only 32 patches for storing any sounds as on the DX7. It's probably better to collect patches from the internet to expand your library of sounds since FM patch-editing is difficult enough on a professional DX synthesizer. Aside from its limitations, the TX7 is an affordable way to get your hands on original DX7 sounds. It has been used by Genesis, Human League and the producers behind the Spice Girls.

It was also used by David Frank of The System for the bells on Don't Disturb This Groove. I can't find the blog post but he's said it himself at davidfrankmusic.com.

Tom: Yes, the mod wheel on both of my midi keyboard controllers work with my TX7. I use a Roland A-30 (76 keys) and an M-Audio Oxygen 8 (25 keys).

I read that the Kawai MM-16 is compatible with the DX-7:

Would it work with the TX-7?

Any one have any experience with either.

Thanks.

Can any of you TX7 owners out there tell me if the Mod Wheel on your MIDI controller (other than DX7) works with the TX7? I can't seem to get mine to register at all. I've done all the obvious like turning it up in the function menu on the TX7 and the Function Editor in DX Manager. Any ideas? I'm using it with an M-Audio Axiom 49.

Thanks, Tom
