Yamaha TX802

Yamaha TX802 Image

Despite its name, the TX802 FM Tone Generator is basically a rack-module version of the DX7mkII with full 8-part multi-timbral operation for sequencing and/or key mapping. It has 16-voices of polyphony and six digital FM Operators, the same as in the DX7mkII. There are 128 preset and 64 user patches for your sounds, as well as an external memory cartridge slot.

As if the large keyboard DX versions weren't difficult enough to program, the TX802's limited interface makes editing and programming your own sounds next to impossible without the help of external hardware or software editors. In the late 1980's, the TX802 was an excellent way to get a compact box full of Yamaha's DX sounds.

Very very underrated synthesizer module. Dont let fool yourself becouse of the interface, it has many good sounds out there for it and vast programming ability -- much more than the 90s romplers. But its not the same as FM7 or FM8 VST.
I guess it got so low mark from this site becouse of cumbersome interface.

@kram

I dont know what to say about TG-77 because I have no experience in owning it.

"FM Theory" book works great with DX/TX series. TG range appeared a little later & and also differs a lot to TX/DX .
I have TG-33 FM/PCM vector synth module and 1U rack TG-55 that have the same AWM/PCM principle. I've heared from someone that TG-77 is more powerful than TX-802. But they are not comparable, because of different synth engines, for example TG offers AWM with double FX processors ans also shares FM/PCM sound generating platforms.

...What about TX-802 it's more like classic FM synth like Ableton's OPERATOR. FM is very sophisticated thing to learn quickly. TX-802 is 8 operator PURE FM system...

...If you have nothing to do with "additive", "subtractive" synth methods', then TX-802 it's a nice platform in gaining experience with "Frequency Modulation". Just download the book!and go on ;) For me it's very interesting and enthusiastic - It's more like sound science;) AS I said earlier TX-802 offer endless possibilities!

Mirko I have very good pdf book for you, just leave me email...

What about best or not, I would just say that this synth is so rich in parameters that no one VST can provide. You can spent month's hooking all possible algorithms togather. It has endless possibilities till nowadays!!!
