Dtronics Find Success On Kickstarter with DT-DX

Post date:

Dtronics, the Dutch maker of high-quality synthesizer controllers recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for the DT-DX. It is a compact, powerful hardware unit based on the GitHub project MiniDexed that promises to provide users with legendary FM sounds in an instrument that is both unbelievably small and affordably priced. Dtronics got in touch with PROBONOPD, the developer of MiniDexed, intending to work together and create a ready-to-use Dtronics DT-DX for everyone not handy enough to put it together themselves. It turned out to be the right call as the Kickstarter, which has a goal of $2,599 quickly sailed past this total thanks to the amount of interest.

The Dtronics DT-DX is essentially eight DX7-compatible FM-synthesizers in a box and relies on a Raspberry Pi 2 Zero to run a version of Dexed. Dtronics designed the dedicated sturdy hardware in a metal housing, to ensure that DT-DX can be used as a professional musical instrument on stage, in the studio, or at home. The software is still MiniDexed, which is a port of Dexed that can run a bare Raspberry Pi without the need for a Linux kernel or operating system. Dtronics even took advantage of a specifically designed printed circuit board in order to make the best use of all the functions that MiniDexed has to offer.

In addition to the sturdy case, DT-DX features a back-lit display in orange and a push-encoder which makes it easy to access sounds and parameters directly from the unit. It also has USB and MIDI connectors, an SD card reader to import and export sounds, and a stereo output. This means DT-DX can be used with any DAW or a MIDI keyboard and controller.

The DT-DX Early Bird for the first 25 hardware units at a discounted price of €299 (about $311) went very quickly as well as the DT-DX Super Early Bird tier which included a one-of-a-kind Dtronics t-shirt. However, new backers can still get their hands on a DT-DX for €349 (about $363). Backers can expect to have the DT-DX in their hands by April 2025.
