After his success with the LYRA-8 synthesizer, Vlad Kreimer went on to found SOMA Laboratory in 2016. Since then, the small boutique company has gone on to release a number of interesting instruments and projects. These range from The Pipe, a mouth-controlled dynamic FX processor, and synthesizer, to Quantum Ocean, a very experimental “electro-shamanistic” project. One of their most anticipated instruments is the PULSAR-23, which is an organismic drum machine designed by Kreimer. It promises a semi-modular structure and will consist of 23 independent modules. According to SOMA Laboratory, PULSAR-23 can be used for everything from the synthesis of percussion instruments and rhythms to bass and melodic lines, effects, and sound landscapes. In addition, it can also be used as a source of control voltage and as a powerful analog FX processor.
The purpose of PULSAR is to continue the line of organismic synthesizers that started with the LYRA-8 but take it into the realm of percussion instruments. The SOMA Laboratory website states that the waiting list for the PULSAR-23 is closed but that orders are being processed and will go out within the next several months. In addition, they will also begin supplying the instrument shops that collaborate with SOMA during this period. Vlad Kreimer also released a short documentary on his YouTube channel to give viewers a unique glimpse into the process of the PULSAR-23 production. The video, which clocks in at just over sixteen minutes, shows how much work goes into creating the instrument. Check out the documentary in Russian with English subtitles below, and let us know what you think of the production process. Many manufacturers are quite secretive about their techniques for creating the hardware that we all love, so it is refreshing to see an inside glimpse of the process from SOMA labs.
