Korg Releases Updated Version of Korg Volca FM

Post date:

Volca FM, the digital FM synthesizer by Korg, is already a pretty powerful bit of hardware for its size, but an updated version is now available that is even better. The new generation Volca FM doubles the voices of its predecessor and includes additional effects, an intuitive interface as well as expanded MIDI connectivity.

Whereas the original Volca FM featured three voices, this has been doubled to six for the new version allowing for a new world of harmonic possibilities. Users will appreciate not running out of voices when sequencing melody, harmony, and bass all in one device. More expressive and nuanced playing is also now possible as the new Volca FM is now velocity sensitive via MIDI.

Korg has also listened to user feedback and added a lush Reverb effect in addition to the Chorus effect. These two effects can be used and adjusted individually too. In terms of MIDI connectivity, the new Volca FM adds a MIDI OUT (In/Out 3.5 mm TRS) along with the MIDI In. It is now possible to use the internal sequencer of the Volca to control other devices through MIDI. This is great for a standalone setup, while the note, control, and clock receipt via the MIDI IN work with any DAW.

The Korg Volca FM boasts a powerful internal sequencer that can loop up to sixteen steps. Users can record their performance on the touch panel keyboard as they play, and up to sixteen sequence patterns can be saved to the internal memory. Thanks to the motion sequence function, it is even possible to record all the subtle nuances of playing and knob movements in real-time. In addition, users can add time-varying changes to the sound, which is great for polishing loops or generating highly original live performances.

Another feature that the new generation of Volca FM brings to the table is a program randomizer. According to Korg, it allows users to find new inspiration through happy accidents and unexpected patches. Highly acclaimed functions, such as the warp active step, pattern chain, and improved arpeggiator, are also incorporated. Korg has revealed that the Volca FM provides new functions for users who want to generate more irregular rhythms. It is even possible to connect multiple sequence patterns for successive playback using the pattern chain function.

Not only does the Volca FM perfectly reproduce the sound engine of the Yamaha DX7 using its six operators and 32 algorithms, but it can even load files in the SYS-EX/SYX format. The Volca FM is a totally hands-on piece of gear with plenty of knobs for on-the-fly sound editing packed into a small form factor. It runs on 6 AA batteries and boasts an integrated speaker. Its MODULATOR/CARRIER edit knobs make for easy sound editing, and Volca FM owners can also use the free online editor to modify their patches without installing anything.

The new Volca FM is available now, and anyone interested can view the full specifications on the official website (https://www.korg.com/us/products/dj/volca_fm2/specifications.php).
