Akai VX-90

Akai VX-90 Image

With an identical voice structure to the AX-73, the VX-90 is little more than a rack-mount version. It is a MIDI equipped six-voice analog synthesizer with advanced digital controls and functions. Like the AX-73 it has an auto-tune function and a really nice VCF lowpass/hipass filter and envelope section. The VX-90's memory capacity holds up to 100 patches. It can be played polyphonically or in a stacked unison mode for that thick lead sound for your rave and techno anthems. A really cool feature of the VX-90 is that you can plug the Akai S-612, S-900 and S-950 samplers in to it and run their samples through the VX-90's analog filter and envelope sections.

Ah, the Akai VX-90, as used by the legendary Nigel Goodwin to create a whole universe of complex aural wonders, most noticeable on the 1994 Globalhead tour but also the rather wonderful Nine Invisibles' Pureheadspace.

BETTER than a polysix??? who are you kidding! Have you ever owned/played a polysix? Polysix is probably the best sounding single VCO polysynth under $1.5k - this on the other hand is not :)

This is one underrated synth. I think it is because it doesn't have knobs. As for the sound, this is much better than P600 or such, and is as good as Polysix and Jupter 6. Actually, editing this synth is very easy and fun.

In my experience with this synth for 10 years, I can say this is one of the most stable / robust vintage synth.

hello dbm, VX80 is not better. I have both and they are just different. While AX80 tends to sound just dirty, VX90 has more sophisticated voice which I find much more useful in many contexts. I also connect S900 with VX90, which is a killer combo. With S900, I sampled many raw synth waves from plugins and Casio CZ, and I can play them with real analog filter and super fast analog envelope. VX filter is super, sounds like between SSM2040 and CEM3040. Clean and fat. Filter FM is very cool feature and it opens up a lot of sound shaping options.

I bought one a few months ago but MIDI stopped working. I bought AX80, and I find AX80 is better.
