ARP Omni

ARP Omni 1 Image

Omni Mk 1 (1975-77)

The Omni is an analog synth with preset Orchestral String sounds. It has polyphonic Violin and Viola waveforms as well as monophonic Bass and Cello waveforms. It is split into 3 sections: Strings, Synthesizer, and Bass synth - all simultaneously available. It has traditional and simple VCA, VCF, and LFO controls for contouring your sounds as well as a nice chorus that really thickens up the string sound. It has no program memory.

Omni Mk 2 (1978-81)

ARP later released the Omni Mk 2 (pictured above). It was basically the same machine as its predecessor, except for a few minor enhancements and a cosmetic Orange & Black color-scheme upgrade. And it did have a much more advanced triggering system for the VCF and VCA for more expressive results. The Omni has been used by Tangerine Dream, The Cars, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Trouble Funk and New Order.

Scored an Omni II on Craigslist for $350 last month. Perfect working condition though a few cosmetic issues but nothing major. A small dent and some scratches and missing most of the slider caps. However, I was able to find some replacement caps at a local hardware store that fit on the Omni perfectly. They're actually end caps for screw threading! 15 cents each and they had them in orange! Pretty cool looking if I do say so myself. And also since then picked a late 70's/early 80's Small Stone pedal for $49 at a guitar shop. Absolute heaven. The immaculate Jarre-esqe string swirl sound!

Promotional shellac record for the ARP Omni from the seventies - I especially love the last minute.

finally found one for a good price, supposedly everything works except Cello.
don't really need it, but nothing else really gets those sounds Greg Hawkes got on the early Cars records.

I have restored a non working ARP OMNI-2. Replaced just about all the tantalum caps and a few transistors. Also rebuilt the power supply. Only problem now is all the synth notes(4' and 8') and string notes(Viola and Violin) have long sustain. Plugging in a sustain pedal makes no difference. None of the sliders seem to make any difference in the amount of sustain. I've been poking around the schematics and testing things, but can't seem to find the answer. Anyone have a clue where to look?

I've got a dead Omni I at a pretty descent price. Brought it back to life after replacing many tantalums (unfortunatelly, not enough room on the board to use electrolytics instead). Sounds quite good. The string section was also used on Solina/Eminent; hence, add a EHX NanoStone + small delay to get Jean-Michel Jarre's strings.
That said, not a reliable machine until you replace ALL the tantalums.
