Modulation Processor 3244 - Integrate Your Hardware Synths Into a Modern DAW Environment

Post date:

Sponsored Post - Anyone recording or sound designing using vintage synths will be familiar with how difficult it can be to perform DAW synchronized parameter modulation. This is why Dialog Audio has come up with a solution in the form of the Modulation Processor 3244. The MP3244 is a powerful modulator plug-in that is designed to help with the integration of your hardware synths into a modern DAW environment. With the use of MP3244, any analogue synthesizer whether classic or otherwise, can be given the ability to synchronize modulation movements to a host application.

What Does It Offer?

Not all synths, especially the vintage ones, are able to offer extended modulation modules. With the MP3244 you have 3 LFO’s, 2 slope generators, 4 envelope generators and 4 VCA outputs at your disposal for the creation of modulations and synchronizations. Because of the modular structure of the MP3244 you have greater flexibility and can get the right signal processing for your specific needs. It also features a wave editor where you can create your own unique modulations by creating custom waveforms that can then be used with one of the LFO’s.

Lots of Connection Options

Setting up the MP3244 for most of the host applications is a straightforward process. Typically only two tracks are needed; one for the MP3244 and the other for the target device. After a virtual MIDI connection is made, MIDI messages are then sent from the MP3244 track to the target device track.

It doesn’t matter what type of audio gear and setup you have, the MP3244 makes it easy to connect everything. Vintage synths with a MIDI input can be synchronized and modulated using either MIDI Continues Controller or System Exclusive parameter changes. MP3244 is also able to generate control voltages using a DC-coupled audio interface.  CV gear can also be controlled using a MIDI to CV converter and the MP3244 also works with any in-host applications that don’t have extensive parameter modulation. The official website features a host of DAW specific setup guides to assist you in the process.

Easy To Use Interface

Modulation Processor 3244 features a clean, compact and intuitive interface to work with. Everything is laid out clearly and logically, which means you don’t have to search through obscure sub-menus. The built-in oscilloscope for each VCA makes it easy to see exactly what is happening at all times. Overall, the plug-in has a very convenient “what you see is what you get” feel to it. To connect modules, all you have to do is click on one of the connection pins and drag it to another using the drag and drop interface. While you can only connect one input to one output, outputs can be connected to several inputs. You’ll find the generators above the oscilloscope display on the interface, while the VCAs are displayed below it.

Initial versions of the software lacked the ability to set the size of the interface as preferred, but this has since been rectified in one of the regular updates. The interface can now be scaled, so everything is clearly visible no matter what size monitor you are using. This was something that many users of the MP3244 asked for after the plug-in was released, so it is great to see that Dialog Audio addressed it so quickly.

Price And Availability

Modulation Processor 3244 is compatible with Windows 7,8 and 10 as well as Mac OS X 10.7+. It is available from the official Dialog Audio website, where you can purchase the full version license. You also have the ability to try out the Modulation Processor before buying as it runs in a special demo mode until the software license key is entered. Demo mode obviously has limitations as loading presets are disabled and the plug-in will stop processing every now and then, but it is still a great way to get a feel for what you can accomplish with it. The software license key is sent via email when purchased and is a breeze to activate if your DAW is connected to the Internet. Activating it on a DAW that has no Internet access is slightly more complicated, but still easy to accomplish using the steps described in the user-guide.

Final Thoughts

With the Modulation Processor 3244 you’ll be able to accomplish more with your vintage synthesizers than ever before. The software is well optimized and able to provide you with complex modulation options using a simple interface.
