Korg Wavestation A/D

Korg Wavestation A/D Image

The Wavestation A/D is essentially a compact rackmount module of the Wavestation EX. It has the 4MB of advanced Vector Synthesis and Wave Sequencing synthesis and editing capabilities. The A/D also has a joystick controller to aid editing the Vectors. A new feature is a stereo analog input for filtering and modulating any external audio sources. They can even be used as part of the vector wave shaping, vocoder and more to incorporate it into your sound. The Wavestation A/D also has a wealth of on-board digital multi-effects for sweet synth sounds and pads! Wavestations are used by Orbital, Depeche Mode, and The Future Sound of London.

The wavestation is an odd instrument. It takes a long time to understand the architecture of this instrument. Even with its big screen and lots of buttons it is taunting to navagate. My units screen was toast when I got it so I replaced the entire screen with a brand new Newhaven blue LCD screen. The sound is different then anything out there. Very digital sounding (in a good way like a Roland JD-800) but the real magic happens in the wave sequencing. I need more time to play with this instrument but I think the possabilities could be very rewarding.

The WS A/D can process the external stereo input in three ways: the unit can run it through the effects, separately or in combination (vocoder programs, or mixed) with internal audio; it can replace two oscillators in a vector mix; and it can be addressed as two waves for wave-sequencing (do some weird stereo pseudo-gating effects)... all at the same time!

Calling it "compact" is a little inaccurate... it's one of the deepest rack modules around, and weighs quite a bit. And unfortunately, the trim controls for the stereo input pre-amps are on the back of the unit.

Tried it when it first came out. Spent hours on it.
Good Idea to vector you older synths in input. Even cheap ones. Too bad no sample input storage. Only setting are stored. Sounds are crystal clear. Not digital sounding. The filter is very primitive and not self resonating. By the way, this could be oversighted by the many sample bits that can be connected together in a sequence to sound like filter sweep. You can setup a sequence with random pulse and analg waveforms to sound like Sample and Hold.
It's OK. One of my favourites.
