Korg Synthe-Bass

Korg Synthe-Bass Image

Korg's Synthe-Bass (model SB 100) is a small 2-octave monophonic bass synth that had a very fat sound. It has one oscillator, an AD Envelope and a low-pass filter. No LFO, no arpeggiators or sequencers and certainly no memory. Small and portable, it came in a brief-case design. Unlike many portable synths of the time, it featured full size keys.

Here is the link to the interview in which The Cars bassist Ben Orr states that the ARP Solus (not the Korg SB 100) was used for synth bass on the song "Think It Over". (Note that ARP Solus was mis-spelled Solace in the interview.)

Hey R.L., Ben Orr doesn't play the Korg SB-100 on The Cars song "Think It Over". I recently read an on-line interview with Greg Hawkes and he said that the ARP Solus was used for the synth bass in this song. I also found the live clip that you mentioned. (It was from the ABC late night show Fridays (1981)). It's obvious from the video that Ben isn't playing the SB-100. It is an ARP Solus with the big orange squares and tons of sliders on the control panel (and the tolex case). Here is the link for the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXvuegYEumc

This wonderful synth was used for quite a few songs on various albums of 12 Drummers Drumming and the debut album of Dead Guitars "Airplanes". Kurt Schmidt of both bands is the proud owner.....lucky chap he is ; )
