Aries 300 Music System

Aries 300 Image

Massachusetts based Aries was a synth manufacturer that offered modular "kits" for modules and modular systems as well as pre-assembled systems such as the Aries 300 series. The Aries 300 is a classic modular system that competed against the Moog, Arp, Buchla, E-mu, and Roland modular systems of the time. They sound very good and can be found in various configurations as seen in these photos. They are purely analog monophonic synths with classic wood paneling, un-cosmetic appearance, mean filters, plenty of envelope, LFO, modulation, analog sequencing, VCOs, and more! A remote 61 note CV/GATE keyboard, tons of knobs and patch-points give you a very flexible analog monster.

these were actually between a moog and an ARP in sound coloring. i bought 3 module kits before running out of money in the mid-70's, sold them and bought a complete PAIA modular and a great used roland echo unit for what I paid for those three modules and power supply (from their plans - not a kit!) so you didn't save that much with the kits. great sound though...

It also came in a prebuilt all-in-one package that looked similar to an Arp 2600, it was covered with black vinyl. The keyboard is duophonic just like the 2600. It's exponential response 1V/octave just like Moog, but uses smaller 1/8" phone jacks instead of the 1/4" used on Moog. Later they partnered with Rivera Music Services (dba RMS, they were doing mod packages on the mini-moog like adding a dedicated LFO & calling it an "RMS modified mini"), which then bought them out, introduced a few final modules & continued to market them for a while.
