The SE-1 is an analog, monophonic synth-module designed to re-create that classic Moog sound perfect for Hip Hop, R&B and Dance music. The classic Moog sound comes from its distinctive 24 dB lowpass voltage controlled analog filter. There is also a 12 dB low-/band-pass filter which emulates the classic sounds of Oberheim synthesizers.

The SE-1 uses three discrete voltage controlled analog oscillators for genuine analog synth sounds. And that's three VCO's, just like the Minimoog. They offer the basic waveforms you would expect from any analog: triangle, sawtooth, reverse sawtooth, square, noise, and random. There are also 4 multi-stage ADSR envelope generators used to shape your sound, the filter and more. Also available are Ring Modulation and Glide/Auto-Glide effects.

With 24 knobs, 21 tactile switches, MIDI control over parameters and plenty of program storage memory (396 presets and 396 user patches), the SE-1 is a professional alternative to its classic forefathers. It is used by Fatboy Slim, Frontline Assembly, Dr. Dre, and Astral Projection.

The SE-1X is an improved version of the SE-1 with the following new features: A total of 198 new sounds - includes the "Lexington G" and "Allec Series" banks. Creatively expanded Modulation capabilities. Greatly enhanced MIDI specs. Tight new look - phatt new logo, sharper, more attractive front and back panel graphics and text. Flash-ROM Web-updateable Operating Software. Smoother tweaking and MIDI transmission of front panel pots (switches send info. as well). External Audio Input.

The SE1-x sounds sweet but it has a number of very annoying attributes.the editing is lame - no osc mix on the front panel! - hrummf. Plus, if the line in is used the noise source is muted, that alone is strange but as the 'line in' jack is on the back of a rack mounted synth... well you can guess how much that gets used.
I'll keep it even though I recently got hold of a Macbeth M3x because of patch memory.

I'm an older guy, and grew up a huge Emerson/Wakeman liistener. I have both the SE-1, and the Moog Voyager RME. I belive both units to be of exeptional quality. I've played real Mini-Moogs, and I believe the SE-1 is an excellent attempt at re-creating it's tonal charm, and they've added just enough features to make it more convienient, without ruining the original concept, and I congratulate the team that designed it! The Moog Voyager is what the Mini-Moog has slowly evloived into over the years, a truly great, and mature instrument, and that blue panel lighting is just........cool......classic. Using both of these instruments together is a real joy....... until the window start to shatter......

I've been having Moog Voyager RME for 2 years. Great Synth. It sounds AMAZING. But not so flexible for making bass sounds as SE-1x. On Voyager you can set only one waveshape on each oscillator or at least you can set a kinda interpolation between them. But on SE-1x it is offered to choose waveshape from three variants. And what is great... you can set one, two, three or any combinations of these three waveforms at the same time. And you can do it on each OSC. So if you need really good peace of gear to create a bass sound, SE-1x is much better and actually quite cheaper.
The only bad thing about SE-1x I know is that it's tune is not so stable. It depends on temperature of the room and you have to adjust it all the time. Just like on old analog gears :) But I'm OK with it :) It can't spoil my pleasure using it :)

Do you really mean to "re-create that classic Moog sound perfect for Hip Hop, R&B and Dance music". It's perfect for other types of music too. Especially for electronic Berlin School music this is the machine to own. Okay not as good as the Macbeth M3x because that one goes deeper in sound, but a perfect buy this analoque rack is. Indeed good value for money.
