Sequential Prophet 600 Image

The first commercially available synth to implement MIDI!! It's a fun synth. Its big brother is the legendary Prophet 5. The P600 is very affordable today and is a great buy. Models with the newest software will enjoy polyphonic MIDI implementation and up to 100 memory patches to store their own sounds! The sound of the Prophet 600 is brighter and harsher than that of a Juno 106 but still just as funky.

The P600 has two oscillators per voice with sawtooth, triangle and variable pulse waveforms. The oscillators can be individually tuned or synced together. Similar quality VCF and VCA sections from the Prophet 5 can be found here too! The P5's Poly-Mod section has also been passed onto the P600.

The P600 is extremely versatile and easy to use! Its best functions include the onboard arpeggiator, 2-track sequencer and poly-modulation. The P600 is great for creating analog effects, swells and drones. It has a cool glide effect and has very flexible modulation possibilities! It is used by Hardfloor, The Higher Intelligence Agency and Eat Static. Perfect for Ambient, Dub and other electronic music.

MIDI Parameter Codes:

  • Record + 1 = program change on/off

  • Record + 5 = sequence dump
  • Record + 6 = Omni mode on

this is a great, and affordable, classic sounding synth. between the two oscillators and envelopes, the LFO and the poly-mod there are infite sound possibilities. PLUS! the capability to store patches is very uncommon in analog synths and a huge help. I use this in my band Ergo, check it out- myspace.com/ergo (although its not too big, its still a bit heavy and large for traveling to Europe).

I recently got one of these. Tried the presets and I was very dissapointed. The factory presets are AWFUL. But...with some playing around and programming this thing is AWESOME. Huge bass sounds that when synced up (MIDI YES!) sound so great!. Also, the arpeggiator is something very special in this synth, that combined with the footpedal you can do some really far out stuff. The filter cutoff is a bit weird cause you can hear it step, but when you send the LFO to the cutoff there are no stepping and it is real smooth. I paid $400 for mine and I do not feel ripped off one bit.

This is a great sounding sleeper for all genres. the midi works great too. really a way more stably tuned synth. the key here is the "tune" button. keeps the synth in pitch if it drifts. the prophet 5 always drifts out of tune. prophet 600 can always be tuned before playing.

Another sad story in the world of me! Found one in a dusty old music shop, with a £100 price tag, only 5 note poly. bought it, replace a sound chip and worked fully, found out that it was 'NEW' and had been sitting around for over 5 years. Wonderful instrument and an historic one being the first MIDI synth. As a session player, digital synths were want was needed at the time (analogue was out of date) so a traded it in for a DX7 II FD a week before the Korg M1 was released. while I still have the DX7 I would give an arm and a leg to have the P600 back.
