Yamaha AN1x Image

The AN1x is a powerful retro-analog synth with a really cool new feature that lets you record real-time editing and filtering and be able to store it as part of the sound! A major contender in the new wave of analog-digital synths using DSP modeling of analog waveforms to recreate the coveted sounds of analog synths with modern digital specifications. It offers truly traditional yet modern methods of analog synthesizing, 10 notes of polyphony, 8 knobs for tweaking, and an arpeggiator with dozens of inspiring patterns!

Although the AN1x is not a follow-up to the CS1x (which has since been followed by the CS2x and the CS6x) it has borrowed many functions and technologies from the CS1x synth. First, it's built in an almost identical case with the same layout of buttons and knobs as the CS1x. However the function of every knob and button has been greatly expanded. The AN1x also has 2 Scene memories for instant recall of any envelope and filter settings and the mod-wheel can be used to morph between the two scenes. On-board effects and a state-of-the-art arpeggiator section also are on-board for giving your sounds life and motion.

The AN1x adds a new Ribbon controller for increased real-time control. It also includes pulse width modulation, ring modulation and oscillator syncing. The AN1x may not be the next evolution of the CS1x but it is basically a more advanced synth capable of increased sound potential and quality. It has a better feeling keyboard than the CS1x as well assuming that the AN1x is for those looking for something more professional than the CS1x. The AN1x is already being used by several artists, film and TV composers world-wide, including Nitin Sawnhey, the Faint, Igor Khoroshev, Yes, Little Tragedies and Phish.

Of course, aside from it having one of the most 'organic' sounds of the cheaper older VA synths, it's also a great center piece synth. I use it amongst other things to edit my true analog synths (well the ones that are DCOs with parameter access rather than nobs) also as an 'instant arpegiator' for any synth that accepts midi. Great for controlling soft synths too. All of that shouldn't undermine it's own sound though, *IF* you program it right it's a beast!

some people have said this is hard to program??? I dont get why. 8 soft knobs, over a 7 catergory matrix, gives pretty imediate access to 90% of teh synth. the rest is in the data entry panel (clearly labelled & just static stuff like portamento type, unison, arp modes etc)

the look of teh synth has a classic 80s style "future-retro" style. most people dont like it. I kinda do.

the sound (most important thing) is awsome! I have owned this synth for a complete decade now, & know it inside out. its a beautifull synth & all maner of sounds can be coaxed. its best at WARM analogue pads & chewing interesting lead sounds that cut a mix up. bass can be good also (but you do need to play to its strengths)

would NEVER sell this. use it like & love it for life :)

Hella...

This keyboard is trash I tell ya. The worzt thing to mankind. Dammit! How could they make a keyboard like this? It sounds like a bloody fruity Osc? That's it! I tell ya!!! Im jumping !

The sounds sound too much like a normal VST.

What a load of crap? But I do recommend it for using it as a baseball bat. It does a good job at swinging balls. Who knows, you might use the plastic to build a dustbin.

Bottom line-if you want good sounds, this keyboard IS NOT IT. rather get your a Jupiter...

Embarrassing tisk tisk tisk..."ahhh...im gonna jump...cant take it anymore...the sounds...no...too much...crap for ma dirty ears that i never waxed 4 years...lol"

Cheap look, less "user friendly" than most of the other VAs but this synth can produce some awesome sounds, and it is very versatile, from early 70's electronic music to trance and techno. Very good keyboard (for a synth or an organ, it's not an acoustic grand piano !)
The sounds are warmer than most of Yamaha's synths and digital pianos.
Very under rated instrument...
Danny, your links are broken (error 404 etc...) !

Of all the VA synths in my studio here and out there, this is the one I always keep coming back to. Great sounds (for a virtual!), rewarding and immediate programming and a surprisingly good keyboard.
