Behringer Announces Pro VS Soul Mini-Synth, JP-4000, and Saturn Soul

Post date:

Behringer recently announced three new synths on Facebook that would be joining their line-up for 2022. First up is the Pro VS Soul synth, a mini-synth that draws inspiration from the Prophet VS Digital Vector Synthesizer by Sequential Circuits.

Behringer Pro VS Soul

Instead of cloning the original synth, the Pro VS Soul has a form factor more akin to what Korg has been delivering with their Volca series. According to Behringer, it is a polyphonic 4-voice hybrid vector synthesizer with presets and full MIDI implementation. Although it is modeled after the Prophet VS, which was released in 1986, it will also have many extra features. For example, it has 127 wave tables, 32 presets, a sequencer, an arpeggiator, and a display with an oscilloscope.

Behringer has stated in their post that the development of the Prophet VS Soul is complete and that it will go straight into production once they have received chips. They have also revealed that the estimated price for the synth will be USD 99.

Following the announcement of the Prophet VS Soul, Behringer also teased another "big, small" surprise. This turned out to be the JP-4000, which is a powerful and portable 4-voice hybrid paraphonic synthesizer with two analog modeling oscillators per voice, an analog filter, arpeggiator, and OLED.

Behringer JP-4000

In their Facebook post, Behringer revealed that their founder, Uli Behringer, built his first synth when he was 16 because he couldn't afford to buy one. The JP-4000 is the culmination of his dream to one day deliver a synth everyone could afford so that children could be introduced to music at an early stage.

The JP-4000 can be powered via a phone and connected to headphones or played via USB/MIDI keyboard and a PA or recording system. Behringer describes it as a full-blown synthesizer in a micro package and also listed what is under the hood of the portable hardware.

  •  Programmable 4-voice hybrid synthesizer with two analog modeling oscillators per voice
  •  Analog filter for warm and natural sound
  •  Reproduction of the JP-8k sound engine with Supersaw waveform
  •  Additional 2-operator FM engine for unparalleled sound possibilities
  •  Authentic 12-bit DAC for classic sound
  •  32 memory presets, expandable via SynthTribe app
  •  16 touch-sensitive keys for great playability
  •  Arpeggiator with three patterns and hold function
  •  Individual envelopes for filter and amplifier for creative sound shaping
  •  2 powerful LFOs to control filter and oscillator tuning
  •  6 function buttons and a bright OLED display for easy and immediate parameter editing
  •  USB Micro connector allows powering via smartphone, power bank, or computer
  •  Comprehensive USB/MIDI implementation (including NRPN/CC control of all parameters and bulk load/save).

The JP-4000 is expected to begin shipping in June from the Behringer factory, and they are targeting a price of USD 49, which would make it their most affordable synth yet.

In their most recent announcement, Behringer revealed the Saturn Soul Synthesizer, which is inspired by the classic Jupiter Synthesizer from the '80s. While they are apparently also working on a full-sized synthesizer based on the Jupiter-8, the Saturn Soul is an inexpensive and compact take on it.

Behringer Saturn Soul

According to Behringer, the Saturn Soul is an Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer with 3 VCOs, Multi-Mode VCF, Arpeggiator, and 16-Step Motion Sequencer. It has the following features:

 • Portable analog polyphonic and programmable synthesizer

 • Inspired by the classic Jupiter synthesizer from the '80s

 • 27 touch-sensitive keys for great playability

 • Pure analog signal path based on authentic VCO, VCF, and VCA designs

 • VCOs with four selectable saw, triangle, square, and pulse waveforms

 • Pulse width modulation for additional sound creation

 • Vintage multi-mode filter with resonance for desirable classic sounds

 • Filter switchable between 2- and 4-poles for additional sound creation

 • Extensive play modes featuring poly, unison, and arpeggiator

 • 16-step motion sequencer with eight memory slots and recording of knob movements

 • LFO with saw, triangle, square and random waves for vibrato, tremolo, and wah-wah effects

 • Voltage Controller Amplifier with a dedicated ADSR envelope

 • Micro USB connector allows powering via smartphone, power bank, or computer

 • Sync Input and Output to synchronize with other synthesizers or drum machines

 • Comprehensive MIDI implementation (including NRPN/CC control of all parameters and bulk load/save)

The product development for the Saturn Soul is also complete, and shipping will begin as soon as Behringer has received the necessary chips. In addition, they revealed that the suggested price is USD 99. The response on their Facebook page to these announcements has been very positive, which has prompted Behringer to ask fans which other models of legacy synths combined with modern features and a USD 49.99 price point they would like to see. Let us know in the comments or on the forum what your thoughts are on these announcements by Behringer and if the low price points will entice you to grab one.
