Korg MS-10

Korg MS-10 Image

The MS-10 is a cool & classic analog synth known for its great bass and percussive sounds. It was released by Korg in 1978 as an entry-level, simple monophonic single-VCO analog synthesizer. With the authentic look of a mini-modular its single VCO is patchable using standard 1/4 inch patch cords to the VCF and VCA. It really is a powerful little mono-synth with plenty of knobs and a compact 32-note keyboard. It is CV/Gate controllable. A very cool feature is its external input to filter which allows you to filter external sound sources! Following the MS-10 came the double-oscillator version, the MS-20. The MS-10 is used by The Orb, SkyLab, the Chemical Brothers, Astral Projection, Autechre, Juan Atkins, Underworld, Sneaker Pimps, Luke Vibert, JunkieXL, and Add N to (X).

Out of all of my synths, the MS-10 actually sounds like it has moving parts inside of it. I cannot get over how rich the low end sounds on this thing. Patching a triangle LFO to the pulse width and playing in the lower register has incredible texture. It's like a disembodied grinding that seems to come from some mechanical movement inside the unit. Maybe it feeling folks get from tweaking their 303's, but on the other end of the spectrum. The MS-10's look also reminds me of some creepy WWII technology, a rare look indeed.

Owned my MS-10 for about 6 months now and i absolutely love it. this synthesizer has so much charm, its like a childhood friend. this is a great little synth for basses with a punch! The MS-10 brings a lot of fun back into sound designing for me, there are no programme banks or general midi to get caught up in, just the simple pleasure of analogue circuitry. The cherry on the cake for me is the filter, the filter can be worked to bring out the most soothing low tones or the spitty sharp highs for noise sweeps etc. The patchable white and pink noise is also a really cool feature to play with.

It's the later versions that have the momentary pushbutton. :)
